Steps

  1. Step 1. Ensure the scene is safe for you before attempting any rescue.
  2. Step 2. If it's safe, reach for the person using a pole, rope, or flotation device rather than entering the water.
  3. Step 3. If you must enter the water, keep your head above the water and stay calm.
  4. Step 4. Remove the person from the water as quickly as possible.
  5. Step 5. Check for responsiveness; call out to them and gently shake their shoulders.
  6. Step 6. If unresponsive, call emergency services immediately or instruct someone else to do so.
  7. Step 7. Begin CPR if the person is not breathing, using chest compressions and rescue breaths if trained.
  8. Step 8. Continue CPR until emergency services arrive or the person starts to breathe.
  9. Step 9. Do not leave the person alone; stay with them until help arrives.
  10. Step 10. Avoid giving them food, water, or forcing them to cough, as this can cause choking.
